Fetal Doppler
The Fetal Doppler heart rate monitor is a hand-held ultrasound transducer that uses the doppler effect to detect the heart beat of a fetus and converts it into an audible simulation of the heart beat.
The heart beat can be heard through speakers or headphones and some models also display the heart rate in beats per minute on a screen.
Originally intended for use by health care professionals, this device has become popular for personal use.
Fetal dopplers can provide reassurance to pregnant women that all is well between visits to their GP or hospital.
There is some evidence to suggest that fetal dopplers assist the bonding process between parents and their unborn baby.
