Nuchal Translucency Scan
This is a special ultrasound scan performed at 11-13 weeks specifically to measure the thickness of the fold in the baby’s neck. It measures the amount of fluid between two layers of skin behind your baby’s neck; those with Down’s have more fluid than those who don’t.
It has the advantage that it is performed earlier in pregnancy than Serum Screening (a blood test). The result is fed into a computer and will give you a risk factor, it is then up to you whether to have a diagnostic test such as amniocentisis.
Less than ten percent of women are offered this scan on the National Health Service, but it is available privately with fees ranging from £80-£150.
