Ultrasound may be used to tackle algae

ULTRASOUND could be used to remove algae from Crosby Marine Lake in the development of the £7m Sefton Water Centre.

It is one method being considered by Sefton Council to improve the quality of lake water.

Consultants have recommended that the new method be tried and tested in Crosby.

A solar-powered device would generate very high frequency sound waves to remove algae.

At Crosby Area Committee meeting last week, Councillor Peter Papworth said: “I’m a shade uneasy about the ultrasound they are proposing to test.

“Ultrasound is quite likely to be detrimental to the mussels that are in the lake.”

Leisure Services assured it would not affect mussels but George Simpson, of Crosby Scout and Guides Marina Club, has asked for investigation into how it would affect children.

He said: “It would be good to have something to say if it would be detrimental to the children.

Children are a little further up the food chain than a mussel.”

To maintain the salinity levels of the lake, there are plans to build a pumping station near the old Radar Tower within Peel Ports’ land at the Royal Seaforth Container Port.

Demolition work has started on the old clubhouse and the scouts and guides club, along with Crosby Sailing Club, has moved to temporary accommodation.
